How solar incentives work in Andalusia
Support for self-consumption (autoconsumo) in Spain comes from three directions: direct grants (subvenciones) from the Junta de Andalucía and the state, local tax reductions (IBI and ICIO), and deductions in your income tax return (IRPF).
Direct grants are released in funded rounds (convocatorias) — once the budget is spent, applications close until the next round. Tax reductions, by contrast, are stable year on year and are in practice the biggest saving for most villa owners on the Costa del Sol.
- Direct grants: typically 15–45 % of the investment depending on the programme.
- IBI (property tax): up to 50 % discount in several municipalities, usually for 3–5 years.
- ICIO (construction tax): up to 95 % off the building-licence tax in some municipalities.
- IRPF: 20, 40 or 60 % deduction where energy performance improves.
Direct grants from the Junta de Andalucía
The Andalusian Energy Agency regularly publishes programmes for self-consumption and storage, often co-funded by EU money (Next Generation / FEDER). Programmes are split by applicant: private individuals, communities of owners and businesses.
Applications are filed digitally with a digital certificate (certificado digital or Cl@ve). The grant is normally paid out after the system is installed, registered and fully documented.
| Applicant | Typical grant level | Common conditions |
|---|
| Private homeowner | 15–40 % of the investment | System ≤ 100 kW, registered installer, apply before starting |
| Community of owners | Up to 45 % | Shared installation, approved at the owners' meeting |
| Battery storage | Up to 45–65 % | Battery linked to a new or existing solar array |
| Businesses and premises | 15–30 % | Company size affects the percentage |
Important: apply before work begins. Invoices dated before the application are normally rejected.
IBI discount — the bonus most owners miss
IBI is the Spanish property tax, paid to your municipality. Many Costa del Sol councils grant a bonificación of up to 50 % of IBI for properties with solar panels, typically for 3–5 years after installation.
It is not automatic — you must apply to the town hall (often through the Málaga provincial tax office) with documentation of the installation. On a Marbella villa with a high cadastral value this can be worth several thousand euros.
- Apply the year after installation, before the deadline in the municipal ordenanza fiscal.
- The panels must not have been mandatory under building regulations (CTE) — so mainly existing homes.
- Conditions and percentages differ between Marbella, Estepona, Mijas, Fuengirola and Málaga.
Income tax deductions (IRPF)
If you are a Spanish tax resident you can deduct part of the investment in your Renta return when the works improve the home's energy performance. The deduction is based on an energy certificate issued before and after the works.
| Deduction | Requirement | Maximum eligible base |
|---|
| 20 % | Heating/cooling demand cut by at least 7 % | €5,000 |
| 40 % | Primary energy use cut by 30 %, or class A/B reached | €7,500 |
| 60 % | Whole-building works (apartment blocks) | €15,000 |
You need an energy performance certificate before and after, and payment by bank transfer or card — cash does not qualify.
Surplus compensation and other financial upsides
Beyond grants, several factors improve the business case: surplus electricity is credited through compensación de excedentes, and the installation typically raises the property value and energy rating.
- Simplified compensation: your electricity retailer credits surplus exports on each monthly bill.
- A battery lifts self-consumption from roughly 35 % to 70–85 % — the single biggest lever on payback.
- ICIO and building licence: many councils discount up to 95 % of the construction tax for solar.
- Rooftop systems below 15 kW in urban areas usually need only a declaración responsable, not a full licence.
Step by step — how to apply
- 1. Book a free assessment: we size the system from your roof, shading and consumption.
- 2. We prepare the technical quote (memoria técnica) required as an annex to the application.
- 3. The application is filed digitally with a certificado digital before installation starts.
- 4. Installation, inspection and registration (legalización) with the Junta de Andalucía.
- 5. Registration with your electricity retailer for surplus compensation.
- 6. Final grant justification plus the IBI discount application at the town hall.
Costa Smart Solutions handles the entire paperwork — from application to legalisation and the IBI discount.
Documents you will need
- NIE and passport/ID, or CIF for a company.
- Certificado digital or Cl@ve for digital signature.
- Nota simple or title deed for the property.
- Your latest IBI bill (for the cadastral reference).
- One electricity bill (for the CUPS number and consumption).
- Quote and technical description from the installer.
- Energy certificates before and after, if you want the IRPF deduction.
